DOHM, G. LYNIS, RICHARD L. HUSTON, E. WAYNE ASKEW, AND PHILIP c. WIZISER. Effects of exercise on activity of heart and muscle mitochondria. Am. J. Physiol. 223(4) : 783-787. 1972.-After 12 weeks on a rigorous schedule of treadmill running, trained and untrained rats were physically exhausted to assess the effects of acute exercise on the activity of several mitochondrial enzyme systems. Skeletal muscle from untrained rats exhausted at 13 m/min demonstrated a decrease in palmitate oxidation but no significant changes in glucose oxidation, mitochondrial yield, pyruvate-malate oxidation, succinate oxidation, ADP/O ratios, or respiratory control. Skeletal muscle from trained rats exhausted at 34 m/min exhibited decreases in palmitate oxidation, mitechondrial yield, pyruvate-malate oxidation and succinate oxidation, but there were no significant changes in glucose oxidation or ADP/O ratios. There was no difference in heart mitochondrial oxygen uptake between trained rested and untrained rested rats; however, in the exhausted state oxygen uptake was greater for heart mitochondria from untrained than trained animals. The data show that exhaustion of trained rats causes a decrease in the capacity of skeletal muscle to oxidize important energy fuels.

Acute and chronic effects of exercise on irisin in healthy adults
Background: Irisin is a myokine that secrets from muscle during and after the exercise and induces non-shivering thermogenesis after stimulation of uncoupling protein-1 (UCP1) gene expression and elevation of number and size of mitochondria. Therefore, irisin activity is effective in reduction of fat percent that lead to treatment of obesity. The aim of this review study was to investigate the ...
متن کاملTHE EFFECTS OF INTERVAL TRAINING INTENSITY ON SKELETAL MUSCLE PGC-1Α IN TYPE2 DIABETIC MALE RATS
Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a 12 weeks interval training with high and moderate intensity on PGC-1α of skeletal muscle in type 2 diabetic male rats. Methods: 40 male rats were divided into two groups: High fat diet (HFD) (n=32) and standard diet (C) (n=8) for 10 weeks. After inducing type2 diabetes via STZ, 8 diabetic rats (D) and 8 rats in group C rats ...
متن کاملEffect of antihypertensive agents - captopril and nifedipine - on the functional properties of rat heart mitochondria
Objective(s): Investigation of acute effect on cellular bioenergetics provides the opportunity to characterize the possible adverse effects of drugs more comprehensively. This study aimed to investigate the changes in biochemical and biophysical properties of heart mitochondria induced by captopril and nifedipine antihypertensive treatment. Materials and Methods: Male, 12-week-old Wistar rats i...

Objective(s): The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of L-glutamine on electromyographic (EMG) activity of the quadriceps muscle injured by eccentric exercise (EE). Materials and Methods: Seventeen healthy men (age: 22.35±2.27 yr; body mass: 69.91±9.78 kg; height: 177.08±4.32 cm) were randomly and double-blind study with subjects assigned to either an L-glutamine supple...
متن کاملImpact of Aerobic Exercise on Restoration of Soleus and Gastrocnemius Muscles Microcirculations in Wistar Rats with Chronic Heart Failure
ABSTRACT Background and Objective: Scientific evidence reveals that the density of skeletal muscle microcirculations decreases in the patients with chronic heart failure. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the impact of submaximal aerobic exercise training on restoration of fast/slow-twitch muscle fibers microcirculation in rats with myocard...
